Annual General Meeting 2018 Report

This year’s JETAA UK Annual General Meeting took place in Edinburgh in March, giving committee members the chance to meet up and discuss the JETAA UK calendar of events as well as enjoy the beautiful capital city of Scotland. As well as JETAA UK committee members and chapter representatives, delegates from the Japan Local Government Centre (CLAIR London) and the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh also attended, giving us an excellent opportunity to share ideas and get advice.

Over the two-day meeting, we heard updates from the current active chapters*, discussed future events such as the upcoming JETAA Careers Day and received an excellent presentation from James Gamgee, Scotland Vice-Chair, who has been involved in organising school primary visits in Scotland to teach children about Japanese culture and language. We also spoke about the requirements of GDPR and how JETAA will manage this to protect our members and their data.

The Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh kindly donated some sake for us to toast the end of our first day and, since people had travelled such a long way, we organised an evening dinner to meet up with local JETAA Scotland members. This inevitably was followed by a visit to a gin bar, where we could try the local Edinburgh Gin.

We would like to thank Matt Sanders and the Scotland Chapter for organising this AGM and the Japan Local Government Centre, the Embassy of Japan in the UK and the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh for the continuous support they show JETAA UK and our members.

*Current active chapters are: London, Midlands, North West and Scotland. We also have volunteers in East Anglia and the North East who are looking to organise meet-ups. Please email chair@jetaa.org.uk for more information on how to organise meet-ups or Japan-related events in your area, or contact your local chapter directly.
