Rural Japan Comes to UK Screens

In recent months, there have been lots of programmes broadcast in the UK from rural regions of Japan. The presenters have visited places well off the beaten track that we, as ex-JETs, probably know very well from our experiences in Japan but are unfortunately not so familiar among the British public. JETAA UK is delighted that these programmes might change that, even inspiring people to find out more about Japan.

BBC 2’s Japan: Earth’s Enchanted Islands visited Honshu, the southwest islands and Hokkaido. It focused on the area's unique wildlife and varied landscape as well as how people adapt to their environment in extraordinary ways.

ITV’s Joanna Lumley’s Japan took us from the icy Siberian seas of the north to the subtropical islands of the south, showing us Japan from the eyes of one of the UK’s favourite actresses. Her unique insights and passion for Japan were very captivating.

And, more recently, BBC 4 broadcast the series The Art Of Japanese Life, which explored how art is represented in nature, cities and the home.
