JETAA London 2019 AGM

明けましておめでとうございます!Happy New Year! Hope you are all having a wonderful start to 2019, the year of the pig!

Last Thursday 17 January, JETAA London held an annual general meeting in our usual Somers Town settings to go over the events of 2018 and think ahead to what exciting things we could do in 2019. It was also an opportunity to select new committee members and we are pleased to welcome a few new members to our team!

2018 was a great year of JETAA London activities and thank you for those who attended any of the events. We kicked 2018 off with an ‘AGM and Games Afternoon’. After we held our discussions about the committee, 2017 reflections and the year ahead, committee members cracked out the board games they had brought along for an enjoyable afternoon in the garden room of Somers Town Coffee House. In chilly February we heated things up with a classic favourite ‘Karaoke and Pub Night’ in Soho. In March we held an ‘Iconic Architecture Photography Tour’ where our Vice-Chair Ryan led the 90-minute stroll around the City, taking in the new and old architecture and London's landmark buildings and gave some really interesting facts along the way. In May many of you came along to our pub quiz which our committee members put together – congratulations again to the winning team! Then it was World Cup fever, and on one superb Sunday in June both England and Japan played! Unfortunately they didn’t go through to play each other in the following rounds, but the JETAA Samurai Sunday was terrific fun and it was great to see so many of you coming to cheer for both your home teams and second home teams.

In July we sent off the new JETs with post-orientation drinks and the opportunity to ask our Alumni group questions about JET, Japan and their experience. In August a few members went along to see ‘The King and I’ and were lucky enough to meet the man himself, Ken Watanabe! In September, we welcomed back the recently-returned JETs with a Careers Forum for a day of panel discussions and breakout sessions to discuss the transition period from being an ALT or CIR in Japan into employment in the UK and how to best leverage those JET skills. We had a great turn-out of JET Alumni representing their companies on the panel discussions, and a range of companies exhibiting with recruitment opportunities in the basement of the venue.

Our last event of the year was on Thursday 6 December: the JETAA London chapter bounenkai drinks, to mark the end of an active 2018, at the Somers Town Coffee House in Kings Cross. Welcoming friends old and new alike – and even a Japanese academic on sabbatical at Cambridge University – the event was a great success, allowing many JET alumni to catch up, swap old stories and celebrate the festive season, as well as meet new people. As well as JETs from across the UK now living in London, JETs originally from Ireland, America and several other countries were in attendance, making for a thoroughly international shindig! Happy 2019!

Thank you again to everyone who participated in the JETAA events this past year. We look forward to seeing you again in 2019, and watch this space for news on upcoming events!

If you would like to be part of the JETAA committee, I would love to hear from you! It’s a great opportunity to make new friends as well as network and gather skills and experience.
