Taiko With a Twist: Drum Tao Stuns JETAA at Sadler’s Wells
Drum Tao is an internationally acclaimed live Taiko drumming group known for their dynamic, creative, and visually stunning performances. In March 2025, Drum Tao came from their native Oita to London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre for a one-of-a-kind event titled The Dream. Hirushan Thavaseelan, JETAA London Communications Officer, reflects on the performance.
I had a brilliant time seeing Drum Tao with fellow JETAA London members at Sadler's Wells Theatre. As a committee member for JETAA, I organised the outing and secured a group discount for the event, making the evening even more enjoyable. I hadn't heard of the Drum Tao group before the event, but they completely blew me away. The show was powerful, precise, and bursting with energy from start to finish.
For those unfamiliar, Taiko is a traditional form of Japanese drumming characterised by its powerful, resonating rhythms and synchronised, energetic movements. It's as much a visual art as it is musical, often involving choreographed performances and theatrical flair.
This performance was especially meaningful to me, as I have fond memories of learning Taiko drumming while on the JET Programme in Susaki, Kochi Prefecture (2015-2018). As part of a team called Kawauso Daiko, I took part in live performances, which made me appreciate how challenging and rewarding Taiko drumming can be.
Watching Drum Tao brought back vivid memories. Some of their rhythms echoed familiar tunes I'd performed, but with a more dynamic, stylised, and electrifying take on traditional styles. An unexpected delight was also how humorous the show turned out to be. The performers had impeccable comedic timing, weaving humour so naturally into the performance that laughter felt like part of the rhythm itself. I found myself laughing out loud more than once.
It was also wonderful to connect with other alumni at the event. We chatted, shared stories, and relished the shared cultural experience. Seeing alumni bring their families along was especially heartwarming, showcasing the joy of sharing a passion for Japanese culture across generations.
Drum Tao is an incredible group, and I'm already eager to see their next performance in London. If you ever get a chance to watch them live, don’t miss it!
